What should we do for summer vacation? That is a major seasonal question that concerns many parents and
students each year. Thankfully for this summer, Taichung City Government has planned a series of interesting
and varied summer-camp activities that cater to the interests and preferences of different students without
causing a financial burden on their parents.
With the arrival of summer vacation, the city government is offering a series of intellectually-stimulating, interesting and diverse summer camp activities that fall into four main themes--"Urban Challenge", "Cultural Lohas", "Green Energy" and "Multi-Categories". Under these are hundreds of choices open to over 10,000 child and youth participants, with opportunities including experiencing the city government first-hand as the "mayor for a day". Most of these events are also free.
Being the city mayor for a day
In order to help young people "understand Greater Taichung during a fun, relaxing summer vacation", 28 Taichung City Government departments will hold a variety of summer-camp activities during the vacation period as an entertaining means of educating youngsters about the workings of the city government. On June 20, after completing a "youth creative school--being mayor for one day" seminar held by National Chung Hsing University, students will have the chance to be a "mayor" for one day with Mayor Jason Hu, helping them better understanding his responsibilities as well as a his on-the-job joys and difficulties.
The Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park will also offer an abundance of youth summer vacation recreational activities, including an art exhibition, technique-learning sessions and related events. This includes, for example, inviting Taiwan's most popular illustrator as part of a summer youth illustration design exhibition; providing an understanding about public-construction projects, and a cultural and creative summer arts camp. There will be a fee to participate in another "robot camp" activity and music festival. Moreover, the Taichung Motor Vehicles Office's Fengyuan district branch will hold a "traffic safety roots experience camp" every Wednesday, featuring favorite hands-on activities like the "traffic safety experience zone" and the "drunk-driving 3D simulation glasses". Groups of over 10 can enjoy free sign-up for this.
Providing summer jobs for disadvantaged youth
Besides various summer camp activities, Taichung City Government has provided summer jobs for college-age youth from disadvantaged families for three years. This year, the city government will not only offer 294 jobs opportunities but also provide training and care programs for these positions, helping young people better understand industry trends and plan their future careers. The Taichung Employment Service Center also is providing the continuously-updated Taichung City Human Resources Network (http://takejob.taichung.gov.tw/) with over 1,000 part-time and 300 full-time job opportunities, enabling all students seeking summer-vacation work to use this platform.
