New Mandatory Motorcycle Insurance

If you happen to be a motorcycle owner, July 1, 1999 is the day of reckoning. On that day, a new mandatory insurance law comes into effect, requiring that ALL cycles be insured. For those who fail to heed this new regulation, the penalty is stiff.

NT$12,000 is the maximum fine against uninsured cycle owners and being involved in an accident without insurance could result in a fine as high as NT$24,000.

The good news is that getting insurance for your motorcycle is a relatively easy and cheap procedure. One year's insurance hardly comes to NT$1,000--a relative bargain by US standards.
To sign up, choose one of the many local insurance firms issuing vehicle insurance. Ask any Chinese or foreign friend who is already insured for a recommendation.

When applying for insurance, make sure you take your cycle registration (updated and in order, of course). After paying, you will receive a small sticker, which must be fixed to the license plate, and an insurance card to be carried with your registration.

The whole procedure should only take about five minutes and, in the long run, could save you a lot of trouble and money.
