Catching World Cup fever in Taichung

With the World Cup taking place in Brazil this year, the extreme time difference has left many football fanatics in Taiwan wondering and worrying about where they'll go to watch live games. The first round of group matches will kick off on June 13 at 4 a.m. (Taiwan time) with games for the following two weeks taking place at 12 midnight, 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. After this, matches in the Round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals will all take place at midnight and 4 a.m., followed by the third-place match at 4 a.m. July 13 and World Cup final at 3 a.m. on July 14.
These late-night times raise the question of which restaurants or bars will be open to show the games. Finding locations for the midnight games will be fairly easy, as it falls within business hours of many establishments. Britannia British Bistro, La Bodega, Bystro, The Oasis, Wild West Tex-Mex, the Evergreen Laurel Hotel's lobby bar, Howard Prince Hotel, and FM Bar & Grill have all given assurances of playing the early games.
When it comes to the later games, however, most establishments have shown less commitment to showing live broadcasts. The owners of Britannia, Bystro, La Bodega and The Oasis have offered to stay open for these matches, provided that there are patrons present to watch them. So, if you'd like to catch a later game, it's best to show up earlier and bring friends. Other bars listed above generally gave less assured answers but may also be playing games, so it might be best to call ahead a bit closer to game times to confirm whether they will stay open or not. For those who aren't night owls, you can also inquire about match replays.
