Max,
the handsome male owner of Chiang Japanese Diner &
Bar, is nicknamed "Sheng Chiang" (meaning
"raw ginger" in Chinese). His ideas for this
place come from years of frequenting pubs and restaurants,
and his travels in Japan. Located in the alleyway by
the Taiwan Cooperative Bank in Taipei's Eastern District,
it is small but the wine and food served there are the
genuine article. The owner also used his connections
to employ his well-known chef, Mr. Lin. Whether he is
preparing traditional or creative new dishes, Chef Lin's
skills inspire awe among diners. Using imported New
Zealand thin beef slices with the tendons and fat removed,
the tasty and succulent Barbequed Beef (NT$200) is prepared
with a Japanese-style sauce. The Japanese-style Teriyaki
Roll (NT$200), containing squid from Argentina, is also
a popular dish among customers. And, on almost every
table, you will find another big hit, the Fried Chicken
Dish (NT$200). When visiting, don't miss the chance
to try some "shochu" liquor. The friendly,
passionate proprietor especially recommends the "Rashiku
Tsukiakari" to all the ladies. If you are coming
with a group of friends, he recommends the "Kaidou"
from Kagoshima, as another great choice. --By Josie
