Chiayi City's Culture Road Shopping District

ADD YOUR RATING & REVIEW | VIEW VISITOR RATINGS & REVIEWS

City planners in Chaiyi City have taken a page out of the "pedestrian paradise" urban design manuals in Tokyo and Taipei and turned the city's famous Culture Road into an evening-time experiment in traffic control. Seven days a week, from 7 pm to 11 pm, cars are now prohibited on the 10 block-long shopping street, with only bicycles, motor-scooters and pedestrians allowed. The result is a much more relaxed atmosphere. It's worth a visit, with many bargains and tasty Chiayi dishes on tap as well. If all goes according to plans, the area may become completely free of car, truck and scooter traffic during evening time in the future. By Dan Bloom
