Thought is something of a wonderland
hidden in an alley near NanMen Road. It's tiny
but attractive, and with more than 15,000 secondhand
books in stock, well-organized and elegant. The
owner, Mr. Wu, seems quite nonchalant, saying he
started this store on a whim. All the books here
were selected by Mr. Wu; no comic books or reference
books are offered. Some of them are items he has
collected for himself. Prices are often 50-percent
below what the book would cost new--even if the
book is in fact brand new. Mr. Wu is also interested
in buying books. Because it is air-conditioned
and clean, with chairs and soft-music provided
for the customers, it's no wonder that this is
a popular store. Mr. Wu is planning to move Thought
to a bigger place, where he can set up a coffee
bar and co-host cultural events. He also hopes
to open a flea market for trading calendars, bookmarks,
and other items. |
