Having started with a street cart in Kaohsiung
County, Kuo Min Kan Restaurant (now in the YenCheng district)
has come a long way in 55 years. Also featured in China Airlines'
magazine and Japanese travel industry write-ups, this establishment
with its mural and inviting fixtures is just shy of being
frenetically busy on many occasions. The owner, Mr. Kuo, laments
that it is unfortunate that "many foreigners living here
may feel local eateries are not up to standard". This
is certainly not the case with this highly frequented focal
point of local cuisine. Here, triangular Glutinous Rice Dumplings
Filled with Pork and covered with a rich sauce and fine peanut
powder (NT$30) or a bowl of Glutinous Rice with Pork (NT$25),
are big hits with regulars and newcomers alike. According
to Mr. Kuo "traditional dishes such as these cannot be
mass marketed, so they are decreasing in popularity as young
customers' tastes and culinary trends change". |
